For those who were hoping that Michigan would name who their starting quarterback is going to be sometime this week, or may next week which leads up to their season opener, they are going to be quite disappointed.
Right now the starting job competition appears to be between Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, with Robinson having a slight edge if some of the media’s gut feelings are to be believed.
Of course Rich Rodriguez, Michigan’s head coach, isn’t leaning publicly towards either one of them, choosing instead to keep everybody guessing. Rodriguez this afternoon indicated he is keeping that same tactic up with all that are involved, including his players.
Detroit News reporter Angelique Chengalis tweeted that Rodriguez said he won’t be informing the quarterbacks who will be starting until the Friday prior to Michigan’s season opener versus University of Connecticut.
According to Rodriguez everyone else, including the other players, will learn who the starting quarterback is at game time.
In these times, of course, it will be almost impossible for word not to leak out about who has been selected as the starter at some point before kickoff. It is somewhat intriguing still that Rodriguez has decided to shroud the decision in secrecy.
Maybe it’s a sign that incumbent Forcier still is in line for retaining the starting job that he held in 2009 as a freshman. Rodriguez, after seeing the public beating Forcier has taken during the last few weeks, the coach may be trying to shield his sophomore quarterback for another week of public scrutiny. Or maybe Rodriguez is just playing mind games and trying to get UConn and Randy Edsall to spend an equal amount of time in their game plans on Robinson, Forcier and even Devin Gardner. Today Rodriguez said the freshman still is in the mix. Maybe Rodriguez knows already he will go with Robinson?
It will definitely make things intriguing either way in the media during the days that lead up to the make or break RichRod season as the head coach of the Wolverines.
