Robinson Out, Michigan Surges Forward with 65-21 Win Over Bowling Green

Posted by Craig Page On September - 25 - 2010

Rich Rodriguez tried to find something that would temper the success of his offense in Michigan’s 65-21 win on Saturday over Bowling Green.

However even Rodriguez had to concede this game’s offense was what he dreams of running.

Rodriguez said, we didn’t punt and had a total of 31 first downs.  That’s pretty efficient I would think.  The whole day I felt comfortable that we would be able to get first downs.  We didn’t need to do much.  Like all other coaches, you go in having your big play list but only end up running a small percentage of them.  That’s a good thing probably.  That way you don’t show your next opponent too much.

No matter what the next opponent may have seen, they may not be able to do a whole lot about it.  Michigan will face Indiana next Saturday in Bloomington for their Big Ten opening game.

Michigan was able to do whatever they wanted to do.  The Wolverines racked up 721 total yards, setting a school record versus a Football Bowl Subdivision/Division I-A opponent.  Their 466 yards rushing was the most since a victory over Illinois in 1986.

Three quarterbacks were part of multiple touchdown drives, along with six tailbacks.  Three of the tailbacks scored touchdowns.  Michigan converted 10 out of their 12 third down attempts and went 8 for 8 scoring touchdowns from the red zone.

Denard Robinson, starting quarterback, had to leave during the first quarter due to a sprained knee (coming on a 47 yard spectacular run).  There appeared to be more concern over who would replace him than the injury.  Devin Gardner, true freshman, came into the game to finish off the last 44 yards on the touchdown drive.

Tate Forcier, sophomore, came in to finish off the first half, then played most of the third as well as fourth quarter.  He led the Wolverines on five touchdown drives and went 12 for 12 to set a school record.

Craig Roh, Michigan defensive end said, I really love our team’s offense.  It’s explosive and dynamic.  Sometimes they score almost too fast.

If that is a curse of Michigan’s their defense will accept it.  Bowling Green only managed 283 yards versus the Wolverines defense, with 71 of those yards coming on one play.  The defense understands how far their offensive machine can carry them.

There were a few miscues that prevented Michigan’s offense from being perfect.  Junior Hemingway dropped a touchdown pass while being wide open, another touchdown was negated when David Mok drew a penalty, and Stephen Hopkins, freshman tailback had a fumble.  However for a performance such as this, these were only minor annoyances.

Steve Schilling, Michigan offensive guard said, any offense is going to tell you their ideal is to be able to do whatever they want.  Today we moved the ball fairly well.

Rodriguez, for two and a half years, has talked about what his ideal spread offense was.  Even on their most successful weeks he has talk about how they could clean things up and areas  that could be improved upon and how they were just inches away from the big plays.

However when a player comes off the bench such as Fitz Toussaint, who is finally healthy, and on his first two carries he runs for 61 yards and then scores on a five yard run, you know something is working.

Michigan Puts Away Feisty UMass 42-37

Posted by Craig Page On September - 18 - 2010

Michigan barely pulled off defeating University of Massachusetts by a score of 42-37.  Players from the losing team said it was tough dealing with the defeat in a game they feel they might have won.  The coach for University of Massachusetts summed the game up by saying he didn’t think his team had played well on defense and that the special teams could have given a better performance.  There were also several mistakes made on offense which contributed to the loss.

The Wolverines scored 28 unanswered points from late second quarter through mid third quarter.  Michigan had a big lead that they gave up eventually.  However they were able to hold on for a narrow victory.  The game was hard fought by both teams.

Roy Roundtree in the game was the go to big play receiver.  He caught three passes for a total of 121 yards and scored two touchdowns.  He had eight catches in the prior game for over 160 yards.  In both games he was the top receiver.

Michael Shaw had 12 carries and 126 yards rushing to lead the team and also scored three touchdowns.  The longest run of the game for him was a touchdown run of 34 yards that was NFL caliber.  It’s too bad one of the teams had to lose.  Throughout the game both offenses were impressive.  However the same couldn’t be said for the two defenses.

Is Denard Robinson Eyeing the Heisman?

Posted by Craig Page On September - 11 - 2010

Let’s talk about this.  Stop worrying we will jinx things.  This is for real and we need to discuss it.

Denard Robinson has positioned himself as the leader of the watch list for the Heisman trophy after the first two weeks of the season.  He isn’t close to the top.  He is the top.

There isn’t another player in the entire country that can match Robinson’s performances versus Notre and UConn.  In only two games his team compiled nearly 900 offensive yards and his quarterback rating is almost 150.  Nine hundred offensive yards in only two games.  That is not a typo.

This season, without a doubt Robinson has been the best player in college football.  The success of the Michigan football team is primarily due to him.  Those are the two main criteria used to determine the Heisman trophy winner, the most prestigious award in college football that recognizes individual effort.

Get over it, if you’re too afraid to discuss it.  College football’s most dominate player is running Michigan’s offense thanks to Rich Rodriguez.

These two games, by the way, are Robinson’s first two as starting quarterback.  The future for Michigan football and Robinson is bright.  That’s like saying Big House has several seats.

Single handedly Denard has defeated teams through the air as well on the ground.  He hasn’t thrown any interceptions.  And people were worried over his throwing ability.  That was just plain silly.  Robinson, in doing this, has returned Michigan’s football program back to the top 25 rankings.  When the next USA Today and AP Coaches polls are released expect Michigan to be No. 20.

Denard in his first two games as Michigan’s starting quarterback has broken record after record, even his own.  When you have started just two games, that’s hard to do.  It could be argued that what Robinson has accomplished this year at quarterback could be considered the greatest consecutive individual offensive performances in two games in the history of Michigan football.  However, it will only seen as such if Michigan continues winning games.

Speaking of winning, the opponents Michigan is facing during the several few weeks will be easier not more difficult.  If Robinson was able to put number up like he did against teams like Notre Dame and Connecticut, what will be able to accomplish versus teams such as UMass?  Most likely it will be so impressive that after the first half he will be benched, which will be too bad for his status, however necessary it may be to ensure that the team continues to be successful going forward.

The Wolverines can be expected to score 50 or more points versus the next two opposing teams, UMass and then Bowling Green.  In three weeks they will be in Bloomington to play Indiana and it wouldn’t be surprising if a crater was left in the ground.  After the close call last year there won’t be any mercy or let up in the game.

Michigan’s next major test will be in a month.  The recent “Big Brother” for the University of Michigan has been Michigan State.

Robinson and the Wolverines still have lots to prove.  Beating the in-state rival is one of the most important things they can do.

If Michigan is able to do that and start their season off with a 6-0 record would eliminate immediately the hanging question of last year of whether or not Michigan would play in a Bowl Game.  Then for Michigan it could be the sky’s the limit  where the Wolverines on any Saturday could be fully capable of defeating any team.

Watch out Ohio State.  That means you.

Denard Robinson Celebrated in Michigans Win Over UConn

Posted by Craig Page On September - 6 - 2010

Rich Rodriguez wishes his secret of who was going to be Michigan’s starting quarterback that he kept all throughout the preseason could remain in place heading into the game on Saturday versus Notre Dame.

On Monday Michigan’s head football coach said, come on why aren’t you asking me the questions you asked me last week?  Ask if he will play.  Will he be the starter?  Has his passing improved?

Consider these questions asked and answered.

On Saturday in the game against UConn Denard Robinson made certain of that.  He had a breakout performance, making the questions seem relevant not to last week but last year.

Tales of Robinson’s accuracy (he went 19 out of 22 passing) and extraordinary speed (he ran for 197 yards), have by now captured college football fan’s attention across the country.

Robinson on Sunday was named as the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Week and the nation’s Player of the Week.  Michigan and Notre Dame will next play Notre Dame on Saturday.  In Notre Dame’s opener they defeated Purdue by a score of 23-12.

Even though Rodriguez had been watching Robinson pull ahead of Take Forcier and Devin Gardener over the spring as well as summer, his instant success appeared to come off of a script.

Rodriguez said, his composure and field vision of what was going on were as good as anything we could have asked for.  He ran south and north, he ran hard.  I was very happy with how from his position he had command of the game.  It’s very rare for a first time starter to do that.

It was the first career start for the sophomore Robinson.  He led Michigan to touchdowns during three of the team’s first four drives.  The Huskies during several of his long runs weren’t even able touch him,  let alone tackle him.

Obviously they aren’t the only ones that are frustrated.

Ryan Van Bergen, Michigan defensive end said, at the hotel on Friday night I told Denard I was happy to see somebody else having to chase him and having to get him contained inside the pocket.  Van Bergen was used to having those duties during practice.

Robinson’s speed was already well known prior to Robinson shredding UConn’s defense.  Last year he was Michigan’s third leading rusher with 409 yards.  He averaged 5.1 yards a carry and scored five touchdowns.  Repeatedly he has contended for the title of fastest Wolverine.

However, based on Robinson’s prior experience, there were many who weren’t able to see his maturation process and were wondering if he would ever become a multidimensional player.

During the 2009 season, Robinson went 14 for 31 passing and had four interceptions.  Everything clicked after he had an opportunity to analyze the opposing defenses along with his coaches during the off-season.

Robinson said, I watched film just trying to learn.  I am open and very eager to learn

Now after Saturday’s game it’s his opponents’ turn now.
